The Alamo - San Antonio Information

The Alamo

The Mission San Antonio de Valero, established in 1718, was later named by Spanish soldiers for their home in Alamo de Parras. In 1835, Texan volunteers took control of the Alamo by defeating the forces of Mexican general Marin Perfecto de Cos. In response, Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led an army of 4,000 toward San Antonio, reaching the settlement on February 23, 1836. Estimates of the Alamo garrison range from 200 to 600 men, including James Bowie, William Travis, and David Crockett. The Texans held their ground for 13 days until Santa Anna's troops stormed the north wall.
