In June of 2001, Tropical Storm Allison flooded the city and caused $5 billion in damage; the city rebuilt and in the wake of 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, provided shelter to more than 25,000 displaced residents of New Orleans in it's apartments and hotels.
Houston was founded in 1836 when John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen purchased the land and persuaded the Texas Congress to designate the site as a temporary capital of the New Republic of Texas. The land was named after General Sam Houston, who had defeated the Mexicans at the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1839 the capital of Texas moved to Austin. During the Civil War, Houston was the headquarters for General John Bankhead Magruder and served as a point of mobilization for the Battle of Galveston. In 1901, the discovery of oil turned this city into the energy capital of the United States. 1961 introduced Houston to the aeronautics industry with the establishment of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Spacecraft Center (later renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.
