Founded in 1842, it is said to be the nation's oldest continuously operated public museum. Nearly 50,000 works are featured, including a large collection of Hudson River School landscape paintings, 16th and 17th-century European paintings, Impressionist masterpieces, 20th-century art, decorative arts and Colonial furniture, two fully restored period rooms, a costume and textile collection, European porcelain and two galleries of African-American art and artifacts.
