Texas State Capitol Building

Construction on this Italian Renaissance Revival-style structure began in 1882 and continued for more than 6 years on the state building, which was influenced by the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. The original plans called for a limestone structure, but native limestone provided unsuitable. When the builder suggested limestone from Indiana, the governor of Texas vetoed the plan. Finally, Texas granite in shades of sunset red was chosen as the primary building material.
