Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach is located at the southern edge of Virginia along the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. It is the largest city in Virginia and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the worlds longest pleasure beach.

The city is known as a scenic resort area with miles of beaches, dozens of hotels and restaurants, and activities to suit all ages. Virginia Beach has several state parks, museums, playground and picnic areas, golf courses, tennis courts and more. The city is also home to one of the top aquariums in the US, the 800,000 gallon Virginia Marine Science Museum.

Early Virginia Beach History

The first colonists landed at Cape Henry in the northeastern part of today's Virginia Beach but the area wasn't conducive to growing food and so they left. The area that they landed on is now known as "First Landing State Park". Less than 30 years later, English settlers began to explore and settle in the area. By 1637, the King of England established 8 shires or counties as we know them, and the area began to grow. By the late 19th century after railroads and electricity reached the area, Virginia Beach began to grow as a resort. The resort area of Virginia Beach became a town in 1906.

Climate

Virginia Beach weather is seasonal with hot and humid summer days and cooler evenings. The spring and fall are the rainiest seasons and the winters produce an average of 7.5 inches of snowfall.
