| Niagara Falls, New York
The famous Niagara Falls is really a series of three waterfalls on the Niagara River between New York and Ontario. Horseshoe Falls, on the Canadian side, is the widest, with a curving crest of 2,200 feet and a height of 176 feet. Bridal Veil in the middle is the smallest. America Falls is the highest at 184-feet and a straight crest of 1075 feet. Altogether, they are a spectacular sight. More than 12 million tourists visit the falls each year.
Niagara Falls is the second largest falls on earth next only to Victoria Falls in southern Africa. Water flows at the rate of 1.5 million gallons per second, although much is siphoned off for electrical power generation. In fact, one-fifth of all fresh water in the world lies in the four Upper Great Lakes of Michigan, Huron, Superior and Erie. It is the outflow from those lakes into the Niagara River which causes the tremendous cascades. The word "Niagara" is from the Iroquois Indian word "onguiaahra" meaning "the strait".
Views of the falls were once blocked by mills and power plants, but those obstacles were cleared away with the creation in 1885 of the Niagara Falls State Park. Today the park offers a visitor center and excellent There are numerous restaurants in the Niagara Falls area. For restaurants on the US side visit Niagara USA restaurants.html and views of the river and falls. Located in the park is the Prospect Point Observation Tower, which offers spectacular views.
Power Vista, located 4.5 miles north of the falls on US 104, is the popular visitor center of the Niagara Power Project, the government agency in charge of hydroelectric power and distribution facilities for the region. The Power Vista has more than 50 interactive exhibits for adults and children. Visitors can view the river, gorge and power plants from the outdoor observation deck 350 feet high. |
