In fact, one-fifth of all fresh water in the world lies in the four Upper Great Lakes of Michigan, Huron, Superior and Erie. It is the outflow from those lakes into the Niagara River which causes the tremendous cascades. The word "Niagara" is from the Iroquois Indian word "onguiaahra" meaning "the strait".

Views of the falls were once blocked by mills and power plants, but those obstacles were cleared away with the creation in 1885 of the Niagara Falls State Park. Today the park offers a visitor center and excellent There are numerous restaurants in the Niagara Falls area.
