Grand Canyon Arizona

The Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, is a 277 mile long chasm that ranges from 4 to 18 miles in width and reaches a mile in depth. It is an awe inspiring sight that attracts more than 5 million visitors annually. For those who love the outdoors, it is one of the US great destinations.

The Canyon was created over millions of years by the turbulent waters of the Colorado River eroding the river bed. What is left to our view are the Canyon walls which are made up of layer after layer of rock, limestone, and shale formations.

The Grand Canyon was first explored in 1540 by Garcia Lopez de Cardenas of Spain. The first inhabitants of the Grand Canyon areas were Native American Indians who built settlements along the Canyon's walls. In the late 1870's, the first recorded scientific expedition to the region was conducted by Major John Wesely Powell.
