The unique flat hard packed sandy beach of Daytona Beach for many years was the home to race cars and high-speed auto testing. In 1959 the sand track was replaced with the Daytona International Speedway and NASCAR race tracks. This flat beach has made Daytona a world renown heaven to racing enthusiasts.

Daytona enjoys warm, mild winters and typical hot Florida summers with its best weather between October and May. This period has less rain and humidity.

Daytona has become a popular vacation spot for college students during spring break, auto and motorcycle racing fans and golf enthusiast. Today, auto driving is still allowed on certain sections of the beach. There are over 16 golf courses in the area. Because of the wide range of attractions, there are hotel rooms available in all price ranges.

Daytona History

In the 1800's, Daytona became a vacation spot of many of the northern rich and famous and the land became an attractive investment. Daytona was named after its wealthy founder, Matthias Day who built his first hotel, the Palmetto House in 1874. The area was incorporated into a city in 1876. In 1926 the towns of Daytona, Daytona Beach and Seabreeze merged to become Daytona Beach.

On March 8, 1936 the first stock car race was held on Daytona Beach. The beach track was replaced by the Speedway in 1959.

Today, the greater Daytona Beach Area draws over 8 million visitors annually.
