Cape Canaveral is located on the east coast of Florida between Jacksonville and Miami and a 1 hour car ride east of Orlando. It is home to the Kennedy Space Center and the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station where most of the United States spacecraft are launched. It is also home to the Air Force Space and Missile Museum (afspacemuseum.us). The Cape Canaveral site was originally chosen by the US government for rocket launch in 1950 for its proximity to the equator, its favorable weather as well as it's proximity to the ocean which allows for year round over the ocean launches.
It is believed that there have been well over 3000 missile, rocket, satellite, and space shuttle launches since the first rocket launch in 1950. Because of the secret and rapid nature around many of the early missile and rocket launches, no one knows the exact number of launches for sure.
The area is also attractive to families of all ages because it is within driving range of Orlando to the west, Daytona Beach to the north and Cocco Beach and Melbourne to the south.
