| California Wine Country - Napa Valley
Napa Valley is one of the most famous wine growing areas in the world. While grapes have been grown and wine made here since the 1800's, what distinguishes this part of the United States is the fact that this area is comprised of a series of micro climates of which Napa is but one, although the most famous. The others are Carneros, Sonoma, and Alexander Valley. Each of these micro climates has unique soil and weather conditions that impart their individuality to the grapes that are grown, which in turn give unique characteristics to the wine that is made. In fact, while a wide variety and often similar types of grapes are grown in each of these areas, the micro climates are very different and give rise to unique types of wine: hardy and classically styled Pinot Noir, Sparkling Wine, and Sauvignon Blanc in Carneros; rich and unctuous Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Sonoma; and rich deep reds, principally Cabernet in Napa. It is the worldwide popularity of Cabernet and the intense quality of Napa Cabernet that has made Napa Valley such a household name and popular tourist destination.
Napa Valley is a long and narrow region, approximately 30 miles north to south and 5 miles east to west, comprised of 19 square miles. It is 42 miles north of San Francisco and slightly closer to the Oakland airport (50 miles) than the San Francisco airport (56 miles) airport which is further south. Most visitors choose to tour the area by car.
Getting to Napa Valley is easy. For driving directions go to: Napa Valley Visitors Info. In Napa Valley, most visitors use Route 29, which is the main north/south route, on which is located the majority of retail stores, towns, lodging, restaurants and shopping; and depending upon the time of the year, jammed with traffic. Less traveled and far less developed is the Silverado Trail which runs parallel to Route 29 and much more rural with mostly farms and wineries. Because these two routes are connected numerous times by a series of east - west roads the Silverado Trail is the preferred route for those who know Napa Valley and those who want to avoid the congestion of Route 29. Of course, first time visitors should travel Route 29 to see the heart of Napa Valley and all that it has to offer, while repeat visitors generally choose the Silverado Trail to more quickly navigate the Valley and avoid sitting in traffic.
Napa Valley has four principal towns. These are beginning in the south and traveling north, Napa, Yountville, St Helena, and Calistoga. Each of these towns has a special character and interest for visitors.
Napa is the largest of the towns and is often the town most visitors overlook, which is unfortunate because it has much to offer in the way of museums, shops, and restaurants.
Yountville is less of a town and more of a shopper's and "foodie's" destination. Yountville is the location of the French Laundry, one of the most celebrated and difficult restaurants to get into in the country. Don't be discouraged however because there are several other excellent restaurants in this town, including one owned by the brother of the owner of the French Laundry. In addition to food, Yountville also has a nice variety of specialty shops and stores.
St. Helena is the most visited town in Napa Valley, principally because it is in the middle of Napa Valley right on Route 29. It is a quaint old town with excellent shopping and a wide selection of restaurants.
Calistoga is at the northernmost part of Napa Valley, and it is definitely worth a visit. For those who have had their fill of wine offers, visitors can go to a micro brewery (Napa Valley Brewing Company) that makes an excellent selection of fresh and refreshing beers in a wonderful outdoor restaurant setting. Calistoga is also a world-renowned destination of healing and renewal with healthful air and natural hot springs. Visitors have been coming to the area's hot springs and mud baths since the late 1800's.

Area Attractions - Significant First Time Visitor Stops
Obviously the reason everyone comes to Napa Valley is for wine. But where there are tourists, can shops and shopping be far behind? Not hardly, and Napa is no exception with a wealth of shopping, from crafts, art, and home furnishings to factory outlets. So visitors who get tired of seeing and tasting wine can always go shopping. Of course wineries are the reason most come to Napa Valley and it would take pages to list all of the wineries that can be found here. The following are those winery stops that in our opinion will give the first-time or novice wine visitor a real feel for and understanding of wine in this wonderful region. They are presented beginning in the south and moving north:
Domaine Chandon
Highway 29 @ California Drive
Yountville, CA
707-944-2280
While Cabernet may be what Napa Valley is most famous for, the house of Domaine Chandon is a standout for any Napa Valley visit. Enjoy a tasting of a variety of excellent American made sparkling wines along with a selection of paté, cheeses, and other accompaniments. There is also a restaurant on site that ranks as one of Napa Valley's best with the spectacular Domaine Chandon winery and vineyard as a backdrop.
Mondavi Winery
Highway 29
Oakville, CA 94562
888-766-6328
If there is one winery and family that has defined Napa Valley and influenced wine and wine consumption in America, it is the Mondavi family and patriarch Robert Mondavi. This is a must stop for every visitor to Napa Valley.
Niebaum-Coppola Estate, Vineyards & Winery
1991 St. Helena Highway
Rutherford, CA 94573
800-782-4266 or 707-968-1100
A trip in itself, Coppola is located on the site of one of the oldest wineries in Napa Valley, the historic Inglenook Winery. Movie maker Francis Ford Coppola has resurrected this site into a wonderful winery and store for things with a wine and Italian accent. Like a movie set, you may find it hard to leave.
V Sattui
1111 White Lane
St. Helena, CA 94574
707-963-7774 or 800-799-2337
Family-owned since 1885, V Sattui's wines are sold only at the winery. Gourmet deli and shaded picnic grounds make it a Napa favorite to sip wine, have a bite to eat, and lounge in the Napa countryside.
Beringer
2000 Main Street
St. Helena, CA 94574
707.963.4812
Beringer is one winery that should not be missed whether it is on your first time visit, or on any other visit to Napa Valley. A visit and tour of this winery gives visitors a great sense of wine and wine making. It is an amazing and very classy facility that will not disappoint.
Clos Pegase
1060 Dunaweal Lane
Calistoga, CA 94515
707.942.4981
An architecturally unique winery that at first glance will have you believe you have been transported to an ancient palace on a Greek Island, possibly of the Minoan culture. Built amidst a great deal of Napa Valley controversy as an eye sore; time has revealed it to be a pleasant change of pace from the rest of the Valley architecture. The owner of this winery has an amazing art collection, selections of which grace the labels of the winery's bottles. There is also a wonderful wine cellar that in addition to wine, houses a collection of ancient statues, most with a wine reference.

The Hess Collection Winery
4411 Redwood Road
Napa CA 94558
877- 707-4377
Besides being one of Napa's better wineries, Hess has a significant contemporary art collection, which is an interest of its owner, and while somewhat removed from the center of Napa Valley, is worth a detour for those interested in art.
