Pennsylvania Dutch Country

Pure Countryside, Horse Drawn Carriages and a Unique Culture. The Amish Country is also known as the Pennsylvania Dutch Country and is located in the bucolic farming and agricultural area of Pennsylvania's Lancaster County, which is located in the southern heart of Pennsylvania.

Harkening back to days long since past, visitors will frequently encounter horse drawn carriages traveling along roads with occupants that have long beards and woman with scarved heads, each donning simple grey and black dress. For those who love the simplicity and the beauty of open rolling farmlands dotted with the occasional stand of shade trees, horses and cows lazily grazing under open blues skies, down home friendliness and home cooked quality meals, the Amish Country awaits with open arms.

Some of the favorite stops inside of Dutch Country include Intercourse, Pa. (Intercourse Town History), and Bird-in-Hand, Pa. (Bird-in-Hand Town History), each small charming country towns located on Route 340, which is located off of Route 30. The Village of Strasburg, Pa. (Strasburg Town History) is a unique village consisting of fine red brick historic homes and brick paved walk-ways, is highly recommended.

A Little Amish History. Perhaps the most enduring symbol of the Amish Country is its own residents - the Amish. The Amish are a community of religious believers that settled the area generations ago, and live farming and agricultural focused lives with little or no modern amenities. The Amish are related to the Mennonite religion which is Christian and derived from old Europe's Anabaptist movement which sprang into being in 1536 due to the writings of a Catholic priest from Holland, named Menno Simons. The "Amish" name comes from a Swiss bishop named Jacob Amman would led a break-away group from the Mennonites in 1693. The population of Amish and Mennonites that settled in 1720 and remain in Lancaster, Pennsylvania followed from William Penn's settlement of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
