Underground Atlanta, expanding six-city blocks of the original downtown Atlanta area, re-opened in 1989 as a retail and entertainment center. With over 225,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and over 6 million visitors a year, Underground Atlanta is aimed at preserving and revitalizing the center of Atlanta.
Underground Atlanta offers a complete family experience, with over 100 retail shops, specialty and gift shops, fast food outlets, multi-cultural events, live entertainment, fine restaurants and interactive activities. For all you grown-ups, Kenny's Alley is the perfect ambience for a great night out on the town.
There are also many features and sites both architectural and historic that still remain and are visible in the area. You can take a walking History Tour through Underground Atlanta and visit sites and markers of the past such as the Railroad Depot, Historic Storefronts, Planters Hotel, Lower Alabama Street, Gas Light, Viaducts, the Historic Connally Building, Peachtree Fountain, Union Depot and the Capitol Building of Georgia.
The history of the South and its growth from Civil War to Civil Rights can all be told from the center of this historic and cultural area that we value and wholeheartedly embrace as Underground Atlanta.
