Martin Luther King, Jr., a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, a minister and foremost civil rights leader, was born and buried in Atlanta, Georgia. Here, Dr. King also worked and worshipped at Ebenezer Baptist Church beside his father. Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site includes a number of facilities that are operated in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), Ebenezer Baptist Church and The King Center. The NPS has carefully preserved several important locations, such as Dr. King's place of birth, work, worship and grave site and other historical aspects of his life within the once thriving African-American neighborhood of Sweet Auburn.
This National Historic Site and Preservation District are important in understanding both the life of Dr. King and the civil rights movement. The historic site is a 39-acre area with a Visitors Center, the Ebenezer Baptist Church Museum, Freedom Hall, Fire Station No. 6, the Eastern National Bookstore, Dr. King's Birth Home Museum, the restored Birth Home Block, the King Center and the Peace Plaza. All facilities with the exception of Dr. King's Birth Home are self-guided tours.
The Visitor's Center also includes an exhibit that narrates King's life through words, photos, artifacts, moving images and live performance. NPS also offers a wide variety of educational programming for school children grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th. There is no fee to visit the Site, however donations are welcomed.
