Zoo Atlanta, founded in 1889 and one of the 10 oldest zoos in the US still in operation, is the leader in the development of building and maintaining natural habitats for endangered species and various other animals. The Zoo spreads out over 40 acres of land making a haven for over 700 specimens, representing over 200 species of animals throughout the world.
The Zoo is visited each year by over 600,000 children and adults, making it the best loved educational institute in Atlanta. It is only one of four zoos in the US to showcase rare giant pandas. Some of the other inhabitants of the zoo consist of gorillas, orangutans, an African black rhino, African elephants, a Komodo dragon, African dwarf crocodiles, a zebra, lions, giraffe, otters, a red panda, monkeys and a large collection of reptiles.
There are many exhibits to visit throughout the Zoo. One of these exhibits, The Ford African Rain Forest, houses gorillas and monkeys and their families. Others include, the Asian Forest, home to the Pandas, orangutans, otters and tigers; the Living Treehouse, sanctuary to 15 species of colored African birds and lemurs; the Flamingo Plaza, home to lions, a rhino, giraffe, bongos and duiker; and the Wonderful Wetlands, a haven for alligators, turtles, butterflies, mosquito fish, pitcher plants and water lilies.
One of the best places to visit in the Zoo is the KIDZone, an interactive area that includes rides and attractions such as Rock Climber, The KIDZone Playground, Nabisco Endangered Species Carousel and the Norfolk Southern Zoo Express Train. KIDZone also features a Petting Zoo and the Base Camp Discovery which offers the Family NightCrawler overnight program. You can also stop and shop for that special souvenir or get a bite to eat in between your safari adventure at the Zoo.
With beautiful grounds and walking paths rich in greenery and settings of animals in their natural environment, the Zoo Atlanta is a sanctuary for all who appreciates and respects all aspects of life in general.
