San Antonio, "Home of the Alamo," is also home to over one million people. It ranks as the second largest city in Texas and number eight overall in the United States. It was founded by Canary Islanders who settled in 1731.
The battle of the Alamo took place in 1836, when Texans (or Texians, as they were then called) resisted the rule of Mexico. The Mexican General Santa Anna moved upon the fort with a force estimated at more than 4000 with a fighting force of about 1600. By comparison the Texan force was only 189 soldiers, including famous names of Jim Bowie, Davey Crockett, and Commander William B. Travis. Almost all of the Texans were killed in their fight for independence, and the battle has become of Texan and American lore.
The city is steeped in a multicultural heritage with a Spanish flavor and has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. Downtown offers attractions such as Hemisfair Park, home of a world's fair in 1968, and La Villita, a restoration of the earliest residential settlement, which now has cobblestone walkways and galleries. Brackenridge Park (where the San Antonio Zoo is located), Sea World of Texas and the Witte Museum are also worth visiting. If you are visiting in April check out "Fiesta San Antonio," a celebration that spans ten days in celebration of San Antonio's diverse culture and honors those who fought at the Alamo.
The city offers an extensive bus and trolley system for visitors to get around the city. San Antonio's airport is located eight miles from the city center. Amtrak is also available.
