Resting on hills above the Ohio River, Cincinnati has long been recognized for its scenic beauty and travel attractions. Winston Churchill called Cincinnati "the most beautiful of America's inland cities." Inland canals and historical railroads constructed in the 1800s brought agriculture and manufactured goods to the city, and barge traffic moved the products along the Ohio River, which connects down to the Mississippi River. Today the barges filled with coal and manufacturing products still flow down the same river path.
Cincinnati is a city of festivals. The annual season starts in April with the Spring Flower Show. The Appalachian Folk Festival is held in May as well as the May Festival, with choral and orchestral performances over two weekends, a tradition that dates back to 1873. The largest festival is Riverfest in September, which draws more than 500,000 people to the river attractions. Travelors enjoy boating, skydiving and fireworks and dining at local downtown restaraunts.
Nearby cities include Hamilton, Middletown, and Oxford, home of Miami University. Located Across the Ohio River is Covington, Ky.
